Periodontics in Racine

Periodontal disease chartPeriodontics is an area of dentistry that involves the structures that surround and support the teeth. Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is one of the most common issues a dentist or periodontist will treat. This condition involves inflammation or bleeding of the gums. If not treated, gum disease can result in the teeth loosening and even falling out. This condition is also called periodontitis. Not only is it a threat to oral health but heart health as well. That’s because gum disease has been linked to serious conditions such as heart disease.

Scaling and Root Planing

Aside from regular cleanings, Dr. Olesen may perform a non-surgical treatment called scaling and root planing in order to treat gingivitis, a reversible form of gum inflammation. This more in-depth cleaning procedure is performed while under local anesthetic. It involves scraping away (scale) plaque and tartar from areas above and below the gum line. Then any rough areas on your roots will be smoothed to eliminate bacteria, allowing gum tissue to heal. If you are experiencing more advanced gum disease, you may need the services of a periodontist. We will refer you to a local trusted specialist.

The Importance of Prevention

By getting routine professional cleanings and checkups, you can help to prevent gum disease. That’s because regular cleanings can remove stubborn plaque or tartar that are difficult to reach while brushing and flossing at home. You still, of course, need to brush at least twice a day and floss once daily. Also, avoid smoking and chewing tobacco. Limiting sugary foods and maintaining a healthy diet also is essential.
